Target Information

Thioredoxins (Trx) are small, multifunctional proteins with oxidoreductase activity, present in virtually all living cells. Trx contains a conserved Cys-Gly-Pro-Cys active site with a redox-active disulfide/dithiol group.
Reduction of oxidized Trx is catalyzed by Trx reductase using NADPH as the electron donor. Reduced Trx acts as a hydrogen donor for ribonucleotide reductase, essential for DNA synthesis, and functions as a general protein disulfide reductase involved in growth and redox regulation.
Trx also interacts with targets such as protein disulfide-isomerase (PDI) and transcription factors including p53, NF-κB, and AP-1. Additionally, Trx contributes to the removal of H₂O₂ when coupled with methionine sulfoxide reductase or peroxiredoxins.
