Target Information
The second messengers cAMP and cGMP are key regulatory molecules involved in various signal transduction pathways. Their levels are regulated by synthesis via nucleotide cyclases and degradation by cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases (PDEs). PDE6 acts as the effector enzyme in the G protein-mediated visual transduction cascade.
PDE6 consists of multiple subunits:
- Catalytic subunits: alpha′ (Cone), alpha (Rod), and beta (Rod)
- Inhibitory subunit: gamma
- Subunit delta: of unknown function, possibly interacting with other proteins
The catalytic core forms:
- Alpha′/alpha′ homodimers in cones
- Alpha/beta heterodimers in rods
