Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol and requires inflammasome activation for cleavage into the active 17 kDa protein. IL-1β signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, sharing these with IL-1α. Its activity is regulated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA), which competitively inhibits receptor binding. IL-1β plays a key role in innate immune defense and inflammation, and elevated levels are associated with chronic inflammatory conditions.
