Background
The product of this gene is a cytokine. Cytokines are small proteins that play essential roles in immune and inflammatory responses. This gene belongs to a cluster of chemokine-like factor genes on chromosome 16. The encoded protein is a potent chemoattractant for neutrophils, monocytes, and lymphocytes, and can stimulate skeletal muscle cell proliferation. It is involved in inflammation and skeletal muscle regeneration. Alternatively spliced variants encoding different isoforms have been identified. Naturally occurring read-through transcription occurs between this locus and the neighboring locus CMTM1 (CKLF-like MARVEL transmembrane domain containing 1). [Provided by RefSeq, Feb 2011]
