Background
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the highly conserved cyclin family, characterized by periodic changes in protein abundance during the cell cycle. Cyclins regulate CDK kinases, and distinct cyclins show specific expression and degradation patterns that coordinate mitotic events. Cyclin D3 forms a complex with CDK4 or CDK6, acting as a regulatory subunit essential for G1/S transition. It also participates in phosphorylation of the tumor suppressor Rb protein. CDK4 activity associated with Cyclin D3 is necessary for progression through G2 phase into mitosis after UV radiation. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene.
