Target Information

Voltage-gated sodium channels regulate sodium ion permeability in excitable cells. During action potential propagation, these channels allow sodium influx for rapid depolarization. Type I and III alpha subunits are mainly expressed in neuronal cell bodies and proximal processes, while type II subunits are abundant along axons. Beta1 subunits are expressed in brain, skeletal, and cardiac muscle. In the brain, beta1 and beta2 are highly expressed in Purkinje cells, and beta1 is also found in pyramidal cells of the deep cerebellar nuclei. Dysfunction of these channels is associated with diseases such as myotonia.
