Target Information
The KIR (inwardly rectifying potassium channel) family allows potassium to flow preferentially into the cell.
KIR4.1 (Kir1.2) is highly expressed in brain tissues such as glial cells, astrocytes, and cortical neurons. It is also found in oligodendrocytes and plays a key role in myelination during nervous system development.
The human KIR4.1 gene maps to chromosome 1.
KIR4.2 (Kir1.3) is expressed in kidney, lung, heart, thymus, and thyroid during development, located on chromosome 21, and may be involved in Down syndrome pathogenesis.
KIR5.1 forms functional channels only when coexpressed with KIR4.1 or KIR4.2 in kidney and pancreas.
