Target Information
Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 4 (TIMP4) is encoded by the gene TIMP4 located on chromosome 3. It belongs to the TIMP gene family and inhibits matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which degrade components of the extracellular matrix.
TIMP4 irreversibly binds to MMPs and inactivates them with zinc as a cofactor. The netrin domain of TIMP4 is involved in platelet recruitment and aggregation. Additional biological functions include:
- Response to cytokine and peptide hormone stimuli
- Involvement in ovulation cycle and CNS development
