Target Information

alpha-Internexin is a Class IV intermediate filament subunit expressed very early in neuronal development. It is related to but distinct from the better known neurofilament triplet proteins (NF-L, NF-M, NF-H), sharing similar sequence motifs and intron organization. Many mature neurons contain alpha-internexin in addition to NF-L, NF-M, and NF-H, while in some neurons it is the only neurofilament subunit expressed.

Antibodies to internexin serve as unique probes to study and classify neuronal types and trace neuronal processes in tissue sections and cultures. Due to its early developmental expression, alpha-internexin serves as an early diagnostic marker for neuronal progenitor cells and other neuron-committed cells. Although its use in brain tumor studies has not been fully explored, it presents potential interest for such research.
