Target Information
Neurofilaments (NFs) are intermediate filaments expressed almost exclusively in neuronal cells, prominently in large axons. NFs consist of three polypeptide chains—NF-M, NF-H, and NF-L—with structural similarity in the coiled-coil core domain but differing in terminal sequences. NF-M tail interactions are essential for axonal architecture and are regulated by phosphorylation and O-GlcNAcylation, affecting filament formation and function.
Antibodies against neurofilament subunits serve as useful neuronal markers due to their abundance, neuron-specific expression, and biochemical stability.
