Target Information
Influenza viruses consist of three types (Influenza A, B, and C), which make up three of the five genera in the Orthomyxoviridae family. Commonly known as the flu, influenza strains can affect both birds and mammals. Influenza strains form roughly spherical particles with a viral envelope containing two main glycoproteins (hemagglutinin and neuraminidase), surrounding the central core of viral RNA and associated proteins. The influenza genome comprises seven to eight segmented fragments of negative-sense RNA, each encoding different viral proteins. Influenza spreads seasonally, causing millions of severe cases annually and significant mortality worldwide.
