Target Information
CD36, also known as scavenger receptor class B member 3, is expressed on macrophages, platelets, and adipocytes. It plays a role in lipid metabolism, inflammation, and atherosclerosis, and mediates recognition and uptake of oxidized LDL, long-chain fatty acids, and apoptotic cells. CD36 also functions as a receptor for thrombospondin and collagen, and is involved in cytoadherence of Plasmodium falciparum–infected erythrocytes. Mutations in this gene can lead to platelet glycoprotein deficiency and are associated with coronary heart disease.
