Product Specific Information

The YB5.B8 monoclonal antibody reacts with human CD117, also known as c-Kit, Steel factor receptor and stem cell factor receptor. This 145 kDa tyrosine kinase receptor is expressed by hematopoietic progenitor cells and mast cells. Interaction with Steel factor promotes proliferation and differentiation of these cells. CD117 is also expressed by melanocytes and plays a role in their activation.

For staining hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) from peripheral blood, clone 104D2 is recommended. See Product #17-1178.

Target Information

KIT (c-KIT) is a proto-oncogene encoding a type 3 transmembrane receptor for MGF (mast cell growth factor, stem cell factor). KIT regulates growth and activation of hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells. Mutations in KIT are linked to gastrointestinal stromal tumors, mast cell disease, acute myelogenous leukemia, and piebaldism.
Activation by SCF leads to receptor dimerization, autophosphorylation, and downstream signaling via Ras/ERK, PI3K, PLC-γ, and JAK/STAT pathways. c-Kit expression is essential for hematopoiesis, stem cell maintenance, and gametogenesis.
