CDH4는 cadherin 초가족에 속하는 고전적 cadherin 단백질로, 세포 간 칼슘 의존적 접착에 관여하는 당단백질입니다. 5개의 세포외 cadherin 반복 영역, 막관통 영역, 그리고 보존된 세포질 꼬리로 구성되어 있습니다. 닭과 생쥐 연구에 따르면, CDH4는 뇌 분절화 및 신경 성장 과정에서 중요한 역할을 하며, 신장과 근육 발달에도 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 또한 cadherin 2와 4가 세포 내에서 안정적인 cis-이형이합체를 형성한다는 연구 결과가 보고되어, 기존의 동종 결합만 가능하다는 인식을 바꾸었습니다. 이 유전자는 서로 다른 isoform을 암호화하는 세 가지 전사 변이체를 가집니다.
