Target Information
This intronless gene (PCBP1) is thought to have originated via retrotransposition of a fully processed PCBP-2 mRNA. PCBP1 and PCBP-2 have paralogues arising from gene duplication events.
The encoded protein is multifunctional and, along with PCBP-2 and hnRNPK, forms major cellular polydomains involved in RNA binding.
PCBP1 and PCBP-2 act as translational coactivators of poliovirus RNA via interaction with stem-loop IV of the IRES and promote RNA replication through binding to the 5′-terminal cloverleaf structure.
It also plays roles in translational control of 15-lipoxygenase mRNA, HPV type 16 L2 mRNA, and hepatitis A virus RNA, and contributes to alpha-globin mRNA stability through formation of a specific mRNP complex.
