Target Information
Alpha-synuclein is a member of the synuclein family (including beta- and gamma-synuclein). These brain-abundant proteins regulate synaptic transmission and membrane trafficking. Alpha- and beta-synuclein selectively inhibit phospholipase D2, suggesting roles in signaling pathways.
Mutations in the SNCA gene (encoding alpha-synuclein) are linked to Parkinson’s disease pathogenesis. Alpha-synuclein peptides are also major components of amyloid plaques in Alzheimer’s disease. Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts encoding different isoforms have been identified.
Diseases associated with SNCA include Parkinson Disease 1, Autosomal Dominant and Dementia, Lewy Body.
