Target Information
The Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) family of proteins share similar domain structures and are involved in signal transduction from cell surface receptors to the actin cytoskeleton. They interact with multiple proteins and are regulated by various stimuli. WAS proteins associate with the small GTPase Cdc42, which regulates actin filament formation, and the Arp2/3 complex.
Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome is a rare X-linked recessive disease characterized by immune dysregulation and microthrombocytopenia, caused by mutations in the WAS gene. The gene product is a cytoplasmic protein expressed exclusively in hematopoietic cells, which show signaling and cytoskeletal abnormalities in affected patients.
A transcript variant with an alternative promoter and distinct 5′ UTR sequence has been described, though its full-length nature remains unclear.
