Target Information
NELF (nasal embryonic luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone factor) is a 530 amino acid transcription factor involved in:
- Migration of LHRH neurons
- Outgrowth of olfactory axons
- Suppression of transcription elongation
NELF is expressed in the peripheral and central nervous systems during embryonic development and is highly expressed in adult testis, kidney, and brain. It couples NMDA receptor signaling to the nucleus, and NELF knockdown impairs GnRH neuronal migration in vitro. Mutations in the NELF gene have been linked to Idiopathic Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism (IHH), a disorder affecting pubertal maturation and reproductive function.
