Target Information
ERN1 (endoplasmic reticulum to nucleus signaling 1) encodes a serine/threonine kinase that serves as a sensor of unfolded proteins in the ER. It possesses intrinsic kinase and endoribonuclease activity, playing a key role in transmitting unfolded protein signals from the ER to the nucleus by splicing XBP1 mRNA. ERN1 is critical for fetal viability and cellular response under ER stress conditions. Depletion or inhibition of IRE1 leads to apoptosis under stress conditions that cause unfolded protein accumulation.
