Target Information

The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. It is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds active testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Upon ligand binding, the receptor translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and activates transcription of androgen-responsive genes.

AR signaling is essential for the development and function of male reproductive organs (prostate, epididymis) and also affects nonreproductive tissues such as muscle, hair follicles, and brain. It is a phosphoprotein that regulates MAP kinase pathways, and its dysfunction is associated with diseases such as prostate cancer, Kennedy’s disease, and male infertility. Mutations can cause complete androgen insensitivity (CAIS).
