Target Information
The SMC3 gene belongs to the SMC3 subfamily of SMC proteins. The encoded protein exists as an intracellular nuclear protein or a secreted proteoglycan.
The nuclear form, structural maintenance of chromosomes 3, is part of the cohesin complex that holds sister chromatids together during mitosis, ensuring proper chromosome segregation.
Post-translational modification with chondroitin sulfate chains produces the secreted proteoglycan bamacan, an abundant basement membrane protein.
