이 단백질은 calmodulin, S-100, parvalbumin, troponin C 등과 함께 저분자량 칼슘 결합 단백질(CaBPs) 계열에 속하며, EF-hand 타입의 Ca²⁺ 결합 구조를 포함합니다.
Calbindin-D-28K는 중추 및 말초 신경계의 특정 뉴런 아형, 그리고 칼슘 수송에 관여하는 신장 원위 세뇨관 및 피질 집합관 세포, 장내 신경내분비 세포 등에 주로 존재합니다.
