Target Information
PIT1 is a pituitary-specific transcription factor responsible for pituitary development and hormone expression in mammals. It belongs to the POU family of transcription factors that regulate mammalian development. The family name derives from the first three members identified: PIT1 and OCT1 in mammals, and Unc-86 in C. elegans.
PIT1 contains two protein domains, POU-specific and POU-homeo, both essential for high-affinity DNA binding on genes encoding growth hormone and prolactin. PIT1 also regulates genes encoding prolactin and thyroid-stimulating hormone beta subunit via thyrotropin-releasing hormone and cyclic AMP.
