Target Information

The Factor VIII gene encodes a coagulation factor participating in the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation.
Factor VIII acts as a cofactor for factor IXa, which, in the presence of Ca²⁺ and phospholipids, converts factor X to its activated form Xa.

• Two alternatively spliced transcripts are produced:
  1. Transcript variant 1 encodes a large glycoprotein (isoform a) that circulates in plasma and forms a noncovalent complex with von Willebrand factor.
  2. Transcript variant 2 encodes a smaller protein (isoform b), primarily consisting of the phospholipid-binding domain essential for coagulant activity.

Defects in this gene result in hemophilia A, a common recessive X-linked coagulation disorder.
