Target Information

Defensins are a family of antimicrobial and cytotoxic peptides involved in host defense. They are abundant in neutrophil granules and epithelial tissues of mucosal surfaces such as the intestine, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and vagina. Members share a conserved cysteine motif and are clustered on chromosome 8. Defensin alpha 4 differs by an extra 83-base segment from a recent duplication. It is found in neutrophils and exhibits corticostatic activity, inhibiting corticotropin-stimulated corticosterone production.
