Target Information
CENPW was initially identified as a gene upregulated in multiple cancers, whose overexpression in mouse fibroblast cells produced distinct cancer-specific phenotypes. It encodes a nuclear protein that associates with CENPT, a component of the CENPA nucleosome complex in the centromere, and is required for proper kinetochore function.
CENPW interacts with the nucleolar phosphoprotein nucleophosmin (B23), which is suggested to assist kinetochore assembly during interphase. Overexpression of CENPW in the SKOV-3 human ovarian cancer cell line and in zebrafish embryos led to apoptosis, indicating that high levels of CENPW induce apoptotic cell death.
