Target Information
This gene encodes a member of a family of candidate taste receptors belonging to the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily. These receptors are specifically expressed by taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate epithelia. The genes are intronless and encode a 7-transmembrane receptor protein functioning as a bitter taste receptor.
This gene is clustered with three other candidate taste receptor genes on chromosome 7 and is genetically linked to loci influencing bitter perception.
TAS2R4 acts as a gustducin-coupled receptor for denatonium and N(6)-propyl-2-thiouracil, involved in bitter compound perception in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract. It signals through PLCB2 and TRPM5 and is expressed in subsets of taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate epithelium, exclusively in gustducin-positive cells.
