Target Information
Sarcoglycan transmembrane proteins are members of the dystrophin complex. Sarcoglycans form a complex localized in the cell membrane of skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle fibers. The complex includes alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-sarcoglycan subunits. Genetic defects in any of these proteins lead to loss or reduction of the sarcoglycan complex, associated with autosomal recessive muscular dystrophy (sarcoglycanopathy). In smooth muscle, beta- and delta-sarcoglycans associate with epsilon-sarcoglycan, homologous to alpha-sarcoglycan. Complete deficiency in delta-sarcoglycan causes Syrian hamster BIO.14 cardiomyopathy.
