HES1 단백질은 basic helix-loop-helix(bHLH) 계열 전사 인자로, bHLH 단백질이 필요한 유전자들의 전사를 억제하는 전사 억제제입니다. 이 단백질은 N-box에 결합하는 특수한 helix interrupting domain을 포함하고 있으며, canonical E-box 대신 N-box 인식에 관여합니다.
