Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary greatly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult.
The MRPS21 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S21P family. Pseudogenes are found on chromosomes 1p, 1q, 9p, 10p, 10q, 16q, and 17q. Sequence analyses have identified splice variants differing in the 5′ UTR, both encoding the same protein.
