Target Information
The S100A8/A9 heterocomplex, also known as the MRP-8/MRP-14 complex or calprotectin, constitutes approximately 60% of the cytoplasmic protein fraction of circulating polymorphonuclear granulocytes. It is also present in monocytes, macrophages, and ileal tissue eosinophils.
Peripheral blood monocytes carry the antigen both extra- and intracellularly, whereas neutrophils express it only intracellularly.
The S100A8/A9 complex exhibits antibacterial, antifungal, immunomodulatory, and antiproliferative effects, and acts as a potent chemotactic factor for neutrophils. Plasma concentrations are elevated in conditions with increased neutrophil activity, such as inflammatory bowel disease.
Because granulocytes terminate after transmigration through the intestinal wall, calprotectin is detectable in feces. Elevated levels have been observed in plasma, saliva, gingival crevicular fluid, stools, and synovial fluid during infection and inflammatory conditions.
