Target Information

TRPV1 (Transient Receptor Potential Cation Channel Subfamily V Member 1)
TRPV1 is a receptor for capsaicin, the main pungent ingredient in hot chili peppers, and elicits a sensation of burning pain by selectively activating sensory neurons. It is a non-selective cation channel related to TRP family members such as TRPC3 and TRPC6 and is permeable to calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium ions.

Structurally, TRPV1 contains six transmembrane domains, a P-loop membrane domain, and three ankyrin repeat domains. It is activated by noxious heat and functions as a transducer of painful thermal stimuli in vivo. TRPV1 mediates proton influx and may contribute to intracellular acidosis in nociceptive neurons. Expression is mainly limited to sensory ganglia neurons. Four transcript variants differing in the 5′ UTR have been described.

Diseases associated with TRPV1 include Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Bladder Disease.
