Target Information

Caspases are a family of cysteine proteases divided into apoptotic and inflammatory subfamilies. Unlike apoptotic caspases, inflammatory caspases (such as caspase-1, -4, -5, and -12) are associated with immune responses to microbial pathogens. Caspase-1 activates proinflammatory cytokines like IL-1β and IL-18 and was initially identified as an IL-1β-converting enzyme. It is also a mammalian homolog of the C. elegans cell death gene ced-3, whose overexpression can induce apoptosis in fibroblasts.
