Target Information
The CD4 antigen is involved in the recognition of MHC class II molecules and acts as a co-receptor for HIV. It is primarily expressed in T helper cells but can also be found in monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. CD4 expression is detected in thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and certain non-lymphoid tissues such as brain and gut. It plays a role in T-cell activation through its association with the T-cell receptor complex and the kinase Lck, and may mediate neuronal damage in immune-related CNS diseases. Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts have been identified (RefSeq, July 2017).
