Ebola virus는 외피를 가진 음성 가닥 RNA 바이러스로, Filoviridae 과에 속합니다. 이 바이러스는 Marburg virus와 유사한 형태를 가지지만 항원적 특성은 다릅니다.
Ebola virus의 게놈은 비분절 RNA 가닥이며, SDS-PAGE 분석 결과 7개의 구조 단백질이 존재합니다. 주요 단백질은 다음과 같습니다:
