Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and facilitate protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition, contrasting with prokaryotic ribosomes where the ratio is reversed. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, both in sequence and biochemical properties, making sequence homology-based recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and sequence analysis has identified three transcript variants encoding different isoforms. Pseudogenes corresponding to this gene are found on chromosomes 5q and 12q.
