Target Information
The SERPINC1 gene encodes a plasma protease inhibitor belonging to the serpin superfamily. This protein inhibits thrombin and other activated serine proteases in the coagulation system, regulating the blood coagulation cascade. It contains two functional domains: a heparin-binding domain at the N-terminus and a reactive site domain at the C-terminus. The inhibitory activity is enhanced by heparin. Over 120 mutations in this gene have been identified, many of which are associated with antithrombin-III deficiency.
