Specificity Comments:
CD35 (complement receptor 1) is a membrane-bound monomeric glycoprotein expressed on erythrocytes, leukocytes, glomerular podocytes, and follicular dendritic cells. It acts as a receptor for C3b and C4b, key components of the complement system involved in the clearance of foreign macromolecules. CD35 is found on erythrocytes, B cells, subsets of T cells, monocytes, eosinophils, and neutrophils. Anti-CD35 serves as a mature B-cell marker labeling follicular dendritic reticulum cells and related tumors such as follicular dendritic cell tumor/sarcoma.
Target Information
CD35 (CR1, Complement Receptor 1) is a cell membrane-bound glycoprotein that serves as the receptor for C3b and C4b, facilitating the clearance of immune complexes. It mediates cellular binding to complement-activated particles and immune complexes. CD35 exists in four allotypes (C, A, B, D) with molecular weights of approximately 160, 190, 220, and 250 kDa, respectively. It is involved in immune complex processing, phagocytosis of C3b complexes, and inhibition of complement activation.
CD35 is expressed on neutrophils, eosinophils, monocytes, B cells, some NK cells, erythrocytes, myeloid leukemias, and follicular dendritic reticulum cells, but not on basophils. Reduced expression or mutations in CD35 are associated with diseases such as gallbladder carcinoma, mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and sarcoidosis. Certain mutations may reduce Plasmodium falciparum rosetting, offering protection against severe malaria. Alternate splice variants and a secreted form of CD35 have been described.
