Target Information

Dystroglycan is a laminin-binding component of the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex that connects the subsarcolemmal cytoskeleton to the extracellular matrix. Dystroglycan 1 is a candidate gene for mutations in autosomal recessive muscular dystrophies. In Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a reduction of dystroglycan 1 disrupts this linkage, making muscle fibers more susceptible to necrosis. Dystroglycan also acts as a dual receptor for agrin and laminin-2 in Schwann cell membranes. Muscle and nonmuscle isoforms differ in carbohydrate moieties but share the same protein sequence. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding the same protein.
