Target Information
BID is a death agonist that heterodimerizes with either agonist BAX or antagonist BCL2. It is a member of the BCL-2 family of cell death regulators and mediates mitochondrial damage induced by caspase-8 (CASP8). CASP8 cleaves BID, and the COOH-terminal fragment translocates to mitochondria, triggering cytochrome c release. BID usually exists in an inactive cytosolic form and becomes cleaved and activated by caspase-8 in response to TNF alpha or Fas ligand. The C-terminal 15 kDa fragment (p15) of BID is sufficient to induce cytochrome c release and apoptosis. BID serves as a molecular link between caspase-8 activation and mitochondrial death machinery.
