Target Information
Mitochondrial inner membrane calcium uniporter (MCU) mediates calcium uptake into mitochondria and forms the pore-forming, calcium-conducting subunit of the uniporter complex (uniplex). Its activity is regulated by MICU1 and MICU2.
- At low Ca²⁺ levels, MCU is down-regulated by MICU1 and MICU2.
- At higher Ca²⁺ levels, MICU1 increases MCU activity.
Mitochondrial calcium homeostasis plays key roles in cellular physiology, regulating bioenergetics, cytoplasmic calcium signaling, and cell death pathways.
MCU is involved in: - Buffering systolic calcium rises in cardiomyocytes
- Regulating mitochondrial calcium during stress response
- Mediating mitochondrial permeability transition in ischemia-reperfusion injury
- Controlling insulin secretion in pancreatic beta-cells
