PAX8 유전자는 paired box 패밀리의 전사 인자 중 하나를 암호화합니다. 이 단백질은 paired box 도메인, octapeptide, paired-type homeodomain을 포함하며, 갑상선 여포 세포의 발달과 갑상선 특이 유전자의 발현에 관여합니다. 변이는 갑상선 형성 이상, 갑상선 여포암 및 비정형 여포성 갑상선 선종과 관련이 있습니다. 다양한 전사체 변이형이 보고되었습니다.
