Target Information

Phosphorylation of serine residues on the I-kappa-B proteins by IKK kinases, including IKBKB, marks them for destruction via the ubiquitination pathway, allowing activation of the NF-kappa-B complex.
IKK beta (Inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa-B kinase subunit beta) is a serine kinase essential for NF-kappa-B signaling, activated by inflammatory cytokines, bacterial or viral products, DNA damage, and other stresses.
It phosphorylates inhibitors of NF-kappa-B on critical serine residues, leading to their polyubiquitination and degradation by the proteasome.
Free NF-kappa-B then translocates into the nucleus and activates transcription of genes related to immune response, growth control, and protection against apoptosis.
Mutations in the IKK beta gene can result in Immunodeficiency 15 (IMD15).
