Target Information
Calponin is a thin filament-associated protein involved in the regulation of smooth muscle contraction. It binds to actin, calmodulin, troponin C, and tropomyosin. Calponin is expressed in smooth muscle and tissues containing significant amounts of smooth muscle. Two isoforms exist (34 kDa and 29 kDa), with the 29 kDa form primarily found in the urogenital tract. It is also expressed in myoepithelial cells from benign and malignant breast lesions, staining smooth muscle, myoepithelial cells, myofibroblasts, keratinocytes, and nerve fibers. It aids in differentiating breast collagenous spherulosis (positive) from adenoid cystic carcinoma and is positive in adenoid cystic carcinoma of salivary gland tumors.
