Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms part of the MHC class I complex. It is expressed on various cell types such as lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial, and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes.
It is also found free in plasma and shares sequence homology with immunoglobulin constant regions, exhibiting a beta-pleated sheet structure.
B2M participates in antigen processing and presentation, TCR signaling, and downstream signaling in naive CD8+ cells.
Encoded by the B2M gene on chromosome 15, mutations can lead to hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia.
B2M levels serve as markers for renal function in transplant recipients and as prognostic indicators in HIV infection.
