Target Information

Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8), a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin family, plays an integral role in signal transduction and T cell differentiation and activation.
CD8 is predominantly expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer of CD8α and CD8β, functioning as a co-receptor with the T cell receptor (TCR) for MHC class I molecules.
CD8α is essential for MHC-I binding and is also found on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells as disulfide-linked homodimers.
Upon MHC-I/peptide complex ligation by antigen-presenting cells (APCs), CD8 recruits Lck kinase, leading to lymphokine production, motility, and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation.
Activated CTLs are crucial for pathogen and tumor cell clearance. Differentiation of naive CD8+ T cells into CTLs is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
