Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, both in sequence and biochemical properties. The MRPL18 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein belonging to the L18P ribosomal protein family. Three polymorphic sites exist in this gene, including one that causes an additional amino acid near the N-terminus.
