Target Information
Interleukin 2 (IL-2) is an immuno-modulatory cytokine that plays a key role in the proliferation of activated T cells and differentiation of B cells, natural killer cells, monocytes, and macrophages. IL-2 signals through the IL-2 receptor (IL-2R), a heterotrimeric protein complex whose gamma chain is also shared by IL-4 and IL-7. Expression of the IL-2 gene in mature thymocytes is monoallelic, representing an unusual regulatory mechanism for precise gene expression control. Disruption of an IL-2-like gene in mice causes an ulcerative colitis-like disease, indicating its essential role in immune responses to antigenic stimuli.
