Target Information
Factor XII is a single-chain zymogen converted to a two-chain serine protease composed of a heavy chain (alpha-factor XIIa) and a light chain.
- Heavy chain: contains fibronectin-type domains, EGF-like domains, kringle domain, and proline-rich domain
- Light chain: contains catalytic domain
Upon activation, further cleavage produces beta-factor XIIa. Factor XII plays a key role in the initiation of blood coagulation, fibrinolysis, and the generation of bradykinin and angiotensin. It activates coagulation factors VII and XI.
Defects in this gene prolong whole-blood clotting time but do not cause clinical symptoms.
