Neurofilaments are intermediate filament proteins found specifically in neurons, composed predominantly of three major proteins: NF-L, NF-M, and NF-H. These proteins are tissue-specific and developmentally regulated. NF-H plays a key role in mature axons and is implicated in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
